I just got back from my 2 week roadtrip to Canada from California :D Had a great time! Went to the Calgary Comic and Entertainment Expo and hung out with so many friends and family. The time just flew by ^^ We also drove back a lot of my fur and supplies that were being stored in Canada. Not all of them (we'll need another couple roadtrips for that. And maybe a trailer) but the fur infusion is always good!

The good thing about the trip is that is that I had a lot of time while we were driving (the round trip was about 70 hours of actual driving time) to consider the future of my business. What I want. Where I want it to go. What is best for my husband and myself and our lives and what is best for my customers.

As I've been alluding to over the past months, there are changes afoot here in the Beetlecat Original's workshop. The new changes are intended to increase my own fulfillment in my art as well as to push my business in the directions I wish it to take

It comes to thus:

My current workload will take me to the end of this year. Until then, nothing changes (ie the new policies will not affect currently quoted projects). However, January 1st, 2013, I am going to be instituting several new policies regarding commissions and commission openings.

1) From now on, I will only accept full costumes. No heads. No partials. No 3/4 partials. No custom tails. etc.

2) Fursuit prices will be increased overall to reflect the longer time spent on them and more will be included in this single price. There will NOT be a 'starting' price that 'extras' are added to. Instead, there will be ONE base price that will include almost everything - any style, most markings and colours, most species, most padding (including digitigrade and feral). Some things will still be extra (such as body pods/muscle suits, wings, full body stretch fur with liner) but most of the more common things are included in the single cost. I will also no longer charge a separate price for shipping, but instead it will be included in the full cost.

An unpadded suit will warrant a discount (so do not fear being overcharged vs a fully padded suit). 'Simple' characters will not though as every character is unique; I spend the same amount of time and effort on each.

3) I will allow more time for each project and open more often. I shall take 9 slots over the year in 3 queue openings. Yes, that means I will only be open for a strict limit of 3 fullsuits at a time but will be opening for new commissions every 4 months (to be completed 4-7 months later).
The above changes in policy will give me the freedom to use whatever materials and techniques I feel would do the best job to match the customer's preferences, such as reticulated foams, NFT fur, custom sculpts, body paddings, etc, without any nickel and dimeing or feeling that I have to chose how to make something within a tighter budget or physical restrictions.

This will last for all of 2013 and, if successful, will be the new policy forever. If I ever accept more partials or heads, it will be on an auction slot system. There will be no warning for these auction slots and they may or may not actually happen.

4) I will be implementing a 'rush' option. The idea is as follows: I open for new commissions and you apply while indicating if it being rushed is a condition of acceptance. If I accept the rush then you pay a rush fee (an extra percentage on top of the quoted price which I will send to you) and I make your project IMMEDIATLY rather than in 4-7 months with the other 3 projects taken at the same time. Essentially, you will be jumping into the queue that I filled out 4 months previous.

This will not impact other current projects as the whole idea of rush is that I work on weekends and evenings and the extra fee is my 'overtime rate' for this service. This is something that I will keep a close eye on to prevent myself from taking on too much work to handle (as I am constantly prone to doing we all know) and so it may not be available right off the bat in January and there will be a strict limit on rush projects as the exception not the rule. But it may be an option for some of you later into 2013.

The last change is this:
4) I will increase production of ear and tails. Starting in January (or maybe before if I can figure out how to adjust my schedule for the last 8 months of this year), I will no longer make them as they are ordered in between other projects and as sort of an aside project when I feel they need to be crammed in; but they will be scheduled in the same as any other project and given the same emphasis.

Basically, my plan is to have a larger selection of ears and tails for sale 24/7 online with a significantly shorter turn-around time between ordering and shipping.

Overview is this: Starting January, I will open every four (4) months for three (3) custom full costumes and will make a selection of non-custom ears and tails through-out the year to be made available on my online Artfire store year-round.

Since my current workload will take me to January and a little ways beyond that into 2013, I will OPEN FOR NEW FULLSUIT-ONLY COMMISSIONS JANUARY 2013, MAY 2013, & SEPTEMBER 2013. To be started in May, September, and January 2014 respectively.

My policies regarding concept art/payment/down payments/etc remain the same and are available in my FAQ: http://www.beetlecatoriginals.com/faq

The FAQ itself will be updated to reflect the new/changed policies as indicated above when they become live.

--

That is about it. Everything is subject to change, of course, since everything is academic until it is actually implemented. And exact details still need to be hammered out, but I'm pretty happy with my decisions ^_^ Less wait = good. More cool things on a regular schedule = good. And continued fulfillment in what I do with less stress associated with it is ALWAYS good ;)

Amusingly, since the beak is foam not plastic as I would use now, it is actually lighter in weight than a head I made now would likely be.

The feet and most of the bodysuit were made around the same time as the head and the hands a while later. I had made a tail but decided recently to make a totally new one to bring it up to current standards. The wing frame has been in various stages of construction and has been remade a few times over the years but the coverings (ie feathers) and the attachments to the body are totally brand new.

The wings are about 3 feet tall and 4 feet wide and weigh just over 10 pounds (includes both wings and the back plate and all attachments). The wings naturally stay extended (in that half open position) but can be manually collapsed for transport (or to fit through doors) but then will spring back out once released.

They are attached to the body using a new method I do not think has been used in this fandom before which is very secure and easy to wear since it provides full body support (rather than a harness which digs into the shoulders or the waist). They can detach without taking the bodysuit off, but they can also stay attached so that one person can conceivably put the costume on (though having a 2nd makes it much quicker as they can support the wings).

Once on, despite how intricate it is, the whole costume is as easy to wear as any other classic fursuit and can come off in seconds, which is everything that I was hoping for when I started making it :D Since I believe no matter how great a fursuit looks, it's not actually useable unless it is comfortable as well.

I am very happy with how this project has come together. I really had no idea when i started it and had to make up a lot of new stuff along the way, which has, I believe, expanded my abilities, as well as my perception of my own abilities, as a costume artist.

I really hope the owner has as much fun with this costume as I have and that it is everything that I want it to be for them.

The inside is a little rougher than I'd normally make on a commission but there are no poky bits or expanses of exposed foam. The balaclava inside is silky to the touch and she's very comfortable! Vision through the large tear duct is great. She has a wefted mane and orange and gold airbrushed accents.

Horn: Glows orange or blue (there is a 3 way switch in her hair) and the tip flashes rainbow. The battery pack is accessible through the back of the head in a little pouch.

Hands: Hooves are made out of epoxy putty painted with gold. A little heavy but 'clacks' very nicely. Since they were previously sewn to a bodysuit, there are finger escapes in the palm that are covered by the long fur. I am willing to extend the wrists of the hands after auction is over.

Feet: Will fit up to a foot of 10 inches long or less. I cannot extend them but you can commission new hooves after the auction is over if they will not fit. They show some wear and scuff marks on the front (which is just paint over thick closed cell foam) but they serve their purpose well and get a lot of compliments,

Tail: A white unicorn tail made from fur and wefted fake hair. Very unique design! Sticks out from the body and wags nicely. Attaches with 2 belt loops (belt not included)

Everything will fit anyone aside from the feet.

Auction details:
Paypal or wire transfer (preferred). I will need payment within 3 days (payment plans may be available. Ask me) Shipping NOT included. This suit is used gently but still USED and sold AS IS. I am starting the auction at less than HALF of what the head alone is worth ;3

PHOTOS:

http://www.furaffinity.net/view/5914301/
http://www.furaffinity.net/view/5893717/
http://www.furaffinity.net/view/5885581/
http://www.furaffinity.net/view/5879847/

VIDEO:

http://youtu.be/Oi2x_ytzUzw (horn test)

When 2011 started, I was in California visiting my boyfriend after he flew up to Canada to visit my family for Christmas.

When 2012 started, I was in California living with my husband after we flew up to Canada to visit my (our) family for Christmas.

It has been a long year XD

---
Personal life:

There was a lot of happiness and a lot of pain but there is no growth possible without either of those. And I can say that right now that despite or because of it all I am the happiest that I have ever been in a way that is impossible to describe to folks that have not experienced it for themselves so I will not belabor the attempt.

This year has been one of change. More than perhaps any other in my adult life.

--
Furry:

Furry has also come into question in my life this past year. I was never very ingrained in the community (coming in via costumes rather than any inborn need) but, like many of my friends in the community, I feel like I'm growing away from it of late. Not a bad thing, but something of note. Life just.. goes on.

--
Work:

The business goes strong. I think I have learned an incredible amount this past year about my art even despite all the other trials in my life. The biggest boon that marriage brings is that I do not feel so hemmed in by requirements of quotas or not spending money on all the cool new shit that may or may not pan out immediately. I have also finally decided not to let other artists (or other people) affect my art. I refuse anymore to chase any ideas of what my art *should* be vs what it is. They can do what they do and I will do what I do.

--

That is it in a nutshell. I can't say where 2012 where go but I expect it will be a much more stable year for me ^_^ Just living and working and a little bit of traveling here and there. Should be fun!

Keeping Fursuits White

Okay so fursuit washing is always a big question, as is keeping the whites white and not grey.

Here is the secret.... Wash it when it is dirty!

Seems simple but a lot of people seem to not be taught when they get their suit how to wash it and so just don't (even partial bits like hand and feet which will not necessarily get stinky and gross the way a bodysuit will but will pick up dirt far faster).

If you just let the stain sit there because you are scared to deal with it, well now it has had time to set in a basically cure (the same way paint cures after sitting for a while or being exposed to heat). Now it is not coming out. Ever.

But if you just wash it as soon as you see it is stained, it is likely to come out faster and better and you will not scrub the fur into a matted mess in the execution.

Please don't be scared to wash a fursuit, just talk to your maker about how they recommend to proceed. Or (better yet) talk to your mother (or whoever did the laundry as you grew up) :p

He is a non-denominational wolf-creature with 2 cute little devil horns (cast from real calf horns) that I made up as I went along. He has a bit of a scuffle scar on his nose ^^

The tail is actually something I made years ago for a blue heeler suit that I had plans to make for myself then finally did get the opportunity to make a couple years after but had changed the design enough not to use the tail XD Another year or so later and it's finally being utilized!

The foot style is new (a little slimmer and sleeker than the old and with realistically raised pawpads visible from the front even with parade soles) and one that I will likely be continuing in the future (I will put photos of the hands and feet in my FA). The toony eyes are not currently being offered to customers but if there is demand then that can change.

Keep your eye out at Further Confusion 2012 in January for this guy!

Customer's Guide: Getting Burned on Buying a Suit

This write-up is not about artist's cheating customers and how to avoid them. This is about two people each with the best of intentions who enter into a contract and how the buyer can STILL end up very unhappy with what they get. I am basing this on stories and 2nd/3rd hand accounts I have heard and my knowledge of the profession as a fursuit maker.

When we take cheats and scoundrels off the list and stick with just regular honest people, and assuming the tastes of the customer do not change as the art is being made, there are two main ways for the customer to end up with an expensive item they may have waited a year to get and, in the end, really do not like or want.

1) NOT ENOUGH RESEARCH

Going with the first person you see. Googling 'Buy a Fursuit' and then picking the first option is not really the best way to get a suit. There are lots and lots of artists out there and each one is different is skill and style and price and if you do not look then you will not find the one that is the best fit for you.

This also counts under 'just going with whoever your friend recommends' as that assumes that your friend and you have the exact same taste in art. They may not have the whole story and may feel bad later that they were the sole reason you picked one artist over another. Do not mix friends and business. Word-of-mouth is useful, but also do your own research.

So that is probably pretty obvious to most and those it is not obvious to will probably never research enough to find this article. So let move on the real point of this write-up.

2) YOUR REFERENCE ART DOES NOT MATCH WHAT IS IN YOUR HEAD

Although this one is obvious, it is also easily overlooked/misunderstood by both sides. I will explain.

There are two types of commissions - one where you give the artist 2 or 3 details (colour/specific feature/species) and they make you something out of your head. If all you want is something totally random and cool, this is a perfect way to get it. No problem!

There is also the commission where you draw/get drawn up EXACTLY what you want does to the last detail. Explain all markings and colours and fur lengths. Whatever is important to you.

Here is the important thing - There is NOTHING in the MIDDLE! You cannot say "here is my reference sheet. But feel free to be creative" because when we are handed a reference then we must follow it as it lies because we do not KNOW what parts we are allowed to be creative over. If we change something that was important then you'll be unhappy. If we follow it exactly then you may still be unhappy but at least we can point to the sheet and say "Look. you gave me this." Being creative with a person's fursona is a very ..delicate proposition at times, we we do not always know if you are the one customer in a million that will make a huge deal over a swoosh marking being turned into an ellipse. And if we mess up on that then we have absolutely nothing to fall back on because the visual reference sheet is always taken as the absolute truth by a jury.

Handing a sheet of written adjustments with this doesn't really help. Although makers often try their best, it can be really hard to keep everyone's commission straight. In the spur of the moment it can be really hard to keep written changes (especially as they often occur over several emails) straight unless they are very very clear and concise. Saying "I like these 2 suits you made" does not help as we cannot look into your mind about what you love about them.

I repeat, Artist's cannot look into your mind. And thus they will play it safe and do exactly what they see drawn on paper.

2b) LEARN WHAT FURS ARE AVAILABLE.

It is fine to assume that an artist will understand that the reference sheet has longer fur on the shoulders or calves or whatever and maybe very short fur somewhere else and super poofy fur on the tail. Because they've done it before.

But realize that a) many fur colours are NOT AVAILABLE in certain lengths. If you want 3 inch fur, you are very very limited in your choices. and b) some furs do not play well with others and this can further limit your choices. If your reference shows your super long fur and your medium fur are the exact same colour, the artist may be forced to pick the same fur for both as there is not always a match available in several lengths.

Drawing up a reference in mind of using these furs you like is fine, but make sure you either use a reference artist who KNOWS FURS or you will have to educate yourself. saying you want the blue fur over the shoulders to be really long is.. fine on paper but in practice is not happening. And don't assume we know the bright yellow fur is supposed to be 4 inch sparkle fur because it is yellow and we have used long fur there in the past.

It is hard to be absolute on this subject as every artist is different in what they prefer and what they use. But I HIGHLY suggest before handing any money over, ask them WHAT FURS they intend to use on your project. Generally, we can glance at the reference and know very quickly what will work where. KNOW WHAT THESE FURS ARE and decide if they are what you want. if they are not, then discuss other options.

2c) DISCUSS WHAT YOU WANT

And by discuss, I mean a 2-way discussion. Writing them a lengthy email is not good enough - they have to reply and indicate that they understand what you mean. And if they do not then you can explain it further until you know they will do exactly as you ask, because NOW they know what is IMPORTANT to you - in this case fur length vs exact colour matching. Or maybe you want markings that follow a certain expression and you, or your reference artist, just didn't know how to draw it. And thus in translating it to fur we won't get what was trying to be conveyed unless you make it clear.

There is value in going with an artist because you like their past work, but cherry-picking your 3 favorites and assuming your suit will be like that is not a good practice. We may have moved on in style and not actually do them like that or you may unknowing pick a style that is incompatible with what your reference sheet tells us.

Talk to us and make sure your needs are being heard. Discovering the suit has been made 'incorrectly' is too late. This all needs to be done before any fur is ever cut up.

---

It is always unfortunate to hear people say "Oh they did a good job on my suit, but it is not really what I actually wanted from them." It is unfortunate that the customer lost a chance to own work that they really loved by a person they really loved, and also unfortunate that the artist lost out on a 100% satisfied customer through no fault of their own.

I have to emphasis that this is not a fault or blame scenario - it is about lack of communication as well as miscommunication. Both people entered into the project with the best of intentions and both people THOUGHT they DELIVERED on those intentions. But with disappointing end results.

As a buyer, the more RESEARCH you do before you buy and the more you can talk to an artist on their OWN level so that they 100% understand where you are coming from with your project ideas, the more likely it is that you will be 100% happy with what you receive from them.

Meet the newest member of the family!

Rain is a 12 week old kitten that we adopted from a local cat rescue. Her original owner was going to take her to the pound so Greyfoot intervened and took on her care.

I had heard that Greyfoot adopted cats out from the local Petsmart (almost literally across the street) so we thought that seemed an easy place to start looking for a ktten and went over on Friday. They told us to come back on the weekend where there would be more cats available to be seen. We went back Saturday and I was immediately drawn to the little orange kitten sleeping happily in her cage.

I have never met an orange cat I didn't like XD

We took her out and petted and played with her and she seemed like a great kitten (happy, bold, playful) so we talked for a bit with the volunteers and filled out an adoption form on the spot.

This morning, we got a phone call saying we were approved for her and we immediately drove out to the shelter proper and picked up our new cat :3

I was a little worried over the night that we had just fallen for the first pretty face we saw (we wanted a forever cat and it needed to compete with the awesomeness of Beetle) but Rain (a name we chose. Based on Red Rain the energy drink) has proved to be absolutely in love and trusting to humans and very adaptable to new things/noises/experiences. As well as being insanely energetic lol.

She is a perfect fit for us.

Beetle was a little perturbed/curious of the whole situation at first but he has basically chosen to ignore her unless she enters his personal bubble. She seems to have already created a game of mock charging at him which mostly seems to exasperate him. She is 5 times smaller than him but 10 times as nimble so he doesn't even try XD

So expect to see more of her in the future! Just remember that Beetle is the one with the white nose stripe! ;D

For the last resin mask I sculpted, I set my camera up in the corner and let it run for an hour as I worked. This is that video sped up X4.

<lj-embed id="122" />

Unfortunately I did not show any more of the process because I did not think I got anything useful from the camera :p But when I finally watched it sped up, I decided it was worth uploading anyways ^^

(crossposted to fursuit)

Received a bit of mail this afternoon and I am now officially legal to work in the USA! :D

More importantly, I am also legal to travel in and out of the USA. Considering I have a flight booked to head up to Canada next week to plan wedding stuff and make my damn dress I was *really* getting worried about this. Well plus the actual wedding being in Canada in little over a month lol. I was quite certain I'd have it before then but there's always the slight 'what if something goes horribly unusually wrong' worry in the back of the head.

So! I'm still all booked up this month with everything unrelated to customers and the Canada trip takes up the rest of the month plus maybe some of the next. Then fly back for the wedding only a week or so after and instantly into Guest of Honour at Rainfurrest to which I still have not finished my duties for ah!

Complicated story short: Back to work in October! ^^ It might take me some time to be able to go full bore crazy (depends what I can bring down from Canada on my trips) but essentially it will be back to business as usual!

:D

Just parroting here what I said on my twitter.

Due to the constraints on my time and how my computer time I often taken up with wedding and other planning or business things, non-customer emails are a low priority right now. Rather than reply to some and lose track or feel stressed over being inconsistent when I have quite enough other things to worry about, I just have a blanket policy at this time to respond only to urgent customer care queries right now (though they still may be slower than usual as I am not checking my email as often either).

As soon as I feel like I have the ability to set aside enough parcels of time in order to give each email the attention it deserves, I will set to work on the backlog of other queries.

Thank you for your patience :3
